                    Tom Thomson (1877 - 1917)

 

Facts 

 

  • Born in Claremont Ontario Canada, left Claremont at 3 months of age

 

 

  • Murdered and drowned at age 39 in Algonquin Park 

 

 

  • Grandparents immigrated from Europe to Claremont in 1830, his dad John was born in the Claremont farm house as was Tom 

 

  • 8 siblings, each played instruments, Tom played violin & mandolin in the village band (picture of siblings)

 

  • Not part of the famous "Group of Seven" but Thomson introduced them to Algonquin Park and inspired them, Group of Seven was formed in 1920 which was 3 years after Tom Thomson's death

 

  • Never finished grade school, couldn't hold a job, excellent fisherman, Canada's most famous painter  of wilderness (picture of him fishing) 

 

  • Thomson was engaged to a Winifred Trainor believed to be pregnant with his child (picture of fiance)

 

  • At his fiance's cottage on the Algonquin Park Thomson argued with a friend over money 

 

  • Thomson was punched, hit his head on a fireplace grate and died 

 

  • His body was wrapped in wire, weighted down, placed in a canoe and tipped to look like a drowning

 

  • Most famous painting is 'The Jack Pine' tree inspired by Alquonin Park
